About
I’m Jasjit Gill. I came to legal work from the business side: investment banking first, then running a listed company.
How I Got Here
I started in corporate finance in 1982 at RHB Investment Bank in Malaysia. For eight years I worked on flotations, rights issues, underwriting, takeovers and restructurings for listed and pre-IPO companies.
During the Asian Currency Crisis in 1987/1988, I took a sabbatical study year and was called to the Bar of England and Wales in July 1988.
In 1990 I joined a Hong Kong listed group as an executive and its in-house lawyer, and became an executive director the following year. Over the next few years I took the group out of financial services and into oil and gas, moved its domicile to Bermuda, and helped bring in China National Petroleum Corporation as controlling shareholder in 1993. The company is now called Kunlun Energy.
Since 1996 I have advised businesses as a legal consultant on my own account: founders, owner-managed companies and investors, on contracts, company matters, fundraising and acquisitions. In 2026 I also became Fractional Legal Director/Legal Advisor for a FinTech group. The group is working towards its first funding round.
That history is why my drafting reads the way it does. I have signed documents as a client and argued over them as a banker, so I write for the person who has to live with the contract.
How I Work
One Adviser
You deal with me from the first call to the final document. Nobody else drafts your work.
Plain English
Short sentences, defined terms used consistently, and no legalese the document can do without.
Written Scope
Every piece of work starts with a written note of what I’ll do, what I won’t and what it costs.
Working Hours
I work remotely from Malaysia, Monday to Friday, 06:00 to 18:00 UTC.
Regulatory Position
I provide unreserved legal consultancy. I am not practising as a barrister or solicitor, I do not conduct litigation or appear in court, and Gill Business Law is not a law firm.
Read the full regulatory information, including what it means for complaints and legal advice privilege.
Send Me the Problem
A few lines is enough. I’ll tell you whether I can help, how I’d approach it and what it would cost.
